I started my first bike shop in 1972 in Redwood City, Ca. which was called Garner’s Pro Bike Shop. My Brother Mike and I then opened a second location in Palo Alto across from Stanford. We started building road bike frames in 1974 and mountain bike frames in 1976 although the term " mountain bike " had not been used, we called them all terrain bikes. In 1974 we became one of the very first dealers to carry Specialized Bicycle Products which started out being European bicycle parts, frame building supplies and tires . I showed Mike Sinyard owner of Specialized a few of my early mountain bikes and helped convince him to mass produce them. When he manufactured the Stumpjumper bicycle, it became the first ever mass produced mountain bike. The new bike became an instant success and since we were one of the only bike shops anywhere to have them, we sold as many of them as we could get. It was years before any other manufacturer was able to duplicate the concept of this bike. It is my belief that the Stumpjumper was the straw that broke the back of the largest bike manufacturers at the time including Schwinn. We were involved in promoting bicycle races and tours throughout the San Francisco Bay area and I was the district rep. for the United States Cycling Federation in 1976 and 1977. In 2002, after the death of my brother Mike, the name of the store changed to Goriide Bicycles and is now owned by Bob Weger. in the 2000, I decided to move up to the Sierra Foothills by Yosemite because of the remarkable off road mountain bike trails and traffic free roads to ride. Our Grizzly Century bike ride takes advantage of these roads to take you through the beautiful San Juaquin river headwaters area of the Sierra Scenic Byway available without the crowds. I opened my new store in the rural Sierra town of Oakhurst as the only bike shop to service the 500+ square mile territory that surrounds Yosemite. We have maps of these wonderful trails and are spearheading the trail maintenance program. There is a mountain bike club that meets at least once a week for rides. These rides are for the more experienced cyclists as there are many climbs and fast downhill runs over terrain that compares to Utah and Yosemite. You can call the shop for ride info or check online on our Google group.
