Yosemite Bicycle Shop opened in January 2001 by Rick Garner in Oakhurst, CA, just south of Yosemite National Park. My wife and I have been coming to this area for most of our lives, enjoying the hiking, cycling, swimming, and other activities available here. We finally decided it was time to make our home here. I have been in the bicycle business for 28 years at Garner's Pro Bike Shop in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1973, I started building bicycle frames. We started the Sequoia Cycling Club a year later and promoted many bike races, including the only one that went up Lombard St. in San Francisco (the most crooked street in the world). My brother and I were involved in the founding of Specialized Bicycle Components Co. and helped Mike Sinyard develop the first production mountain bike in the world (the Stumpjumper). In 1975, I was the district representative for the U.S. Cycling Federation and issued Greg Lemond his first racing license at a race my club was holding in San Francisco. Oakhurst is just twelve miles south of Yosemite National Park in the Sierra foothills. We have many trails for all skill levels and country roads to ride without much traffic and no smog. There is no off-road cycling allowed in Yosemite, so off-road cyclists come to our trails to experience the beauty, technical terrain, and wilderness experience that this area can offer. Road cyclists can enjoy the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, which starts in North Fork, or ride around Bass Lake. There are many dirt roads that easy enough for average riders and children. Bass Lake is only a couple of miles from Oakhurst and offers lots of recreational activities, resorts, campgrounds, and great restaurants. |

These shots are from the 007 trail at Bass Lake, CA. There are three sections of this ride, each at a different skill level. It has 25 jumps, 47 turns, and is used as a race course for the annual 007 DH race.

This is at the top the Goat Mountain singletrack ride that is about six miles long. There are tight technical and rocky sections with great views of Bass Lake and the Sierra National Forest and two destinations at the lakeshore. If you do the complete loop back to the starting point, the ride is about 10 miles long. |
Willow Creek trail is an advanced/ expert run down along a creek above Bass Lake. The trail is about two miles long with lots of granite slopes and rock drops. Full suspension bikes are recommended. This ride starts with a four-mile road ride up to the top of the trailhead or can be done as a shuttle run. |
Tenaya Lodge to Nelder Grove ride. This ride starts in the town of Fish Camp and takes an easy five-mile ride to the turnoff, on a somewhat rocky singletrack for another 6 miles to the Nelder Grove redwood forest. Along the way, you will pass a number of large trees like the Hocksworth Redwood Tree shown here. The ride starts at 5200 ft. and is mostly shady so even on a hot day, this ride is nice and cool. Out and back is around 20-23 miles depending on which of two return routes you take. This ride can be combined with the Lewis Creek Trail which is another 2 miles of intermediate level singletrack after a descent of about five miles. |
Shuteye Mountain ride. This ride can be done a number of ways and definitely qualifies as an EPIC mountain bike ride. We recommend the shuttle ride starting at about 5000 ft. above Bass Lake. It takes dirt and jeep trails up to the 8600 ft. peak followed by a return down the same trail, or you can descend the singletrack down the back side and end up at the top of the Brown Creek singletrack trail which takes you to the top of the 007 trails which then take you back down to Bass Lake about three hours later. |
Mammoth Mountain is just over the hill from the Bass Lake area and offers great mountain biking with CC and DH rides. You don't even have to ride up because the ski/bike lifts are going year-round. This picture is from the DH race held there in 2001. |
